Ashish Sharing his views
Disclaimer cum preface: This email is completely based on true incidents of my life in BVM and outside it. DO NOT MISS OUT THE WORDS WRITTEN IN CAPITAL LETTERS and underlined sentences THROUGHTOUT THE ARTICLE.
Friends! First and foremost, as an old saying goes..."Failure is the first step to Success", so did happen in my case. My negligence and over confidence (I write this with no shame as I want to you all to take note of and not repeat it ever in your life). My NEGLIGENCE and OVER CONFIDENCE cost me my LnT interview. The night before my L&T interview I became over-confident (due to my higher grades,a 8 point something CPI and a successful TCS interview) and did not touch even a single technical reference book to go through atleast the basics of Electrical Engineering. The moment I entered the interview room in admin block, I realized I had committed a grave mistake which reflected in my stupid idiotic answers to the questions that were shooted to me by the interviewers. So dont ever take anything lightly in your life. It will cost you later if not immediately.
And I realized the after-effects of this mistake after I completed my B.E. when I was made to sit at home due to the delay of TCS joining date. The first 2 months after July 2009 were real hard to live. Frustration hovering over my head as NO COMPANY in Vadodara or Vidyangar for that matter, was ready to hire me or any other fresher. All the companies, big and small, which I approached, had a BOND clause ready to which I did not agree as I was in the process for applying selection procedure of core MNC/PSU companies like BHEL & Jindal. A thought that 24x7 that a BE Electrical Engineer with Distinction was made to sit at home used to haunt me. Every morning when I used to start to pray, tears would roll down my eyes. The REASON I AM TELLING YOU ALL THIS IS, I don’t want this to happen with any of you, not a single one of you.
In August, I applied for the GET 2010 recruitment drive of Jindal Steel & Power Limited (JSPL). I read about it in Employment News and by visiting www.freshersworld.com . So you too start subscribing Emp News as soon as possible WITHOUT FAIL. JSPL had given an ad for recruitment of some 500 odd freshers across India.
The obvious effect of lessons learnt from past and an opportunity knocking at door inspired me to start preparing for the written exam of JSPL. I bought a good reference book written by Mr. R.K. Rajput for preparing the Objectives of various topics in Electrical Engineering. Like any other written exam, this too had both the technical and apti part to it. Apti was something which is my forte, so did not have much problems attempting it. An advantage with this written exam was that it had no negative marking. Still, the technical part of the paper was tough. Even though I had prepared 2 months for it, it gave me jitters answering 50% of the technical questions. So, TWO MONTHS STUDY is NOT SUFFICIENT. Due to my high scoring in Apti section and relative confident answers in Tech part, I cleared the written exam of JSPL held on 4th Oct, 2009.
Around 41000 engineers had appeared for the written exam from all over India, of which about 2600 cleared the written exam. JSPL has a history of selecting just 5 - 6 % engineers from the total appeared lot. Out of those 2600, 610 were electrical engineers. Simple mathematics said that if JSPL wanted 500 engineers from 5 branches, it would take atleast 100 from electrical. So my next task was to perform in GD and Interview round in such a manner that I would be among those 100 from the total 610. The GD & Interview round took place on a national basis in 7 to 8 cities like Chandigarh, Raipur & Delhi. I gave it in Mumbai on 27th November, 2009.
ACTIVE PARTICIPATION IN EXTRA-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES had already instilled in me a fearless attitude to speak right things at right time. This helped me EXTENSIVELY in my GD. The topic was “Can there exist a classless society?” I initiated the GD and spoke only for 3 to 4 minutes in the entire GD of 20 minutes. THIS IS ONE IMP LESSON OF BEING A PART OF A GD which I learnt through GD events of FORSSEE & IE(I) Electrical, various GD sessions I had with a senior faculty of our electrical dept and through a unique but enjoyable-cum-learning GD competition arranged by BVM Training & Placement Cell. (where it was a terrific experience of having GD with enlightened brains of other depts… IT WAS SUPERB).
Next came the interview! THE BIG FISH! And I had a trap ready. With guidance got from some exceptional people of the college, I had learnt that the interview is successful only when you drive the interviewer to the area which you want to him to. And then it’s a cakewalk. IT CAME TRUE.
JSPL is a company which is now expanding hugely in the Power Sector. Any electrical student of BVM will be well-versed with the basics and current technology of the Power System Generation & Protection due to efforts of the senior-most faculty of the dept and a living legend I can safely say. Personally, I love the power generation part very much. So I prepared it very thoroughly. TO GIVE MYSELF A CUTTING EDGE OVER OTHER CANDIDATES, I did two things:
1.I learnt some things which we were not taught in BE curriculum. I got well versed with PLC & SCADA and even learnt programming PLCs.
2.I researched a lot, with help of my buddies in L&T, about the current technology being applied world over for power generation. Those things don’t have even a mention in our curriculum.
So, to DIRECT MY INTERVIEW towards my well-prepared strength, I mentioned it in my INTRODUCTION through a CREATIVE IDEA. Come what may, you should always prepare the introduction lines of your interview beforehand and practice is 1000 times before the mirror. It gives a great deal of confidence.
My preparation towards Modern Power Generation practices made my introduction take shape thus: I am Ashish Muley from Vadodara, Gujarat. I graduated in July 2009 as an Electrical Engineer from Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya, Vallabh Vidyangar. MY VISION IS LIFE IS TO SEE INDIA AS THE LARGEST POWER PRODUCER IN THE WORLD AND NOT ONLY THE LARGEST BUT ALSO THE MOST EFFICIENT ONE…. And the rest followed about hobbies and other stuff. As soon as I completed my introduction, the first question shooted to me was, “you say you want the most efficient power generation, can you tell me the current power generation practice being followed in India as far as thermal power generation is concerned? And what to do to improve it?” And then… THE BALL WAS IN MY HITTING ZONE… 75% of my interview were towards the area which I had prepared thoroughly. Rest 25% questions the interviewer asked were about the A, B, Cs of Electrical Engineering. I had a SATISFYING interview which emerged SUCCESSFUL eventually on 23rd January,2010.
I was among the 115 Electrical engineers selected by Jindal Steel & Power from the whole nation. It is a feeling which I still find hard to digest but it is definitely a burden-relieving one. The burden of failing in an interview 2 years back, the burden of being at home for 6 months after BE was finally relieved. SELF BELIEF AND ENDURANCE did bear fruits. I thank sincerely the whole of BVM including its faculties, non teaching staff, and the wonderful premises which have played a great great part in my character building. THANKS is just a small word. I SALUTE BVM.
SUMMARY: (Yaar poora article kyu padhvaya, sidha sidha summary hi pehle bol dia hota to…..)
•Don’t be overconfident and negligent during any endeavor of life.
•Learn and think over the failures you meet, persist with trying and have Self Belief.
•Be updated about the recruitment drives happening across the nation by subscribing Employment News or visting relative websites.
•2 months of study is not sufficient for any competitive/written exam. So rest aside the thought of studying it in the last 15 days.
•Actively participate in Extra-curricular activities
•Don’t shy away from referring to good books.
•Always think of how you would have a cutting edge over others and make efforts to get one.
•Update yourself about the current technology being invented/applied. www.livescience.com is a superb site for that.
•Apply Interview skills you developed by attending sessions arranged my BVM placement cell. (IF YOU ARE NOT ATTENDING…do it now) (psst…. I am not saying this because I was told to write here about it but dil se.. ATTEND IT)
•Believe SELF BELIEF AND ENDURANCE does pay.

BVM, FAVOURITE AMONG INDUSTRIES
The entire world was suffering from global recession in the year 2008-2009. Almost the whole nation was affected by global recession. In such difficult situation also, Gujarat state’s First degree engineering college Birla Vishvakarma Mahavidyalaya remained intact in the matter of campus recruitment. Till date, more than 40 companies have visited BVM for recruitment processes and more than 179 students are placed. The companies which have visited BVM include big names like Larsen & Toubro, Godrej, Patni Computers, Essar, Shapoorji Pallonji, TCS, TATA Motors etc. BVM is also among the major attraction for various upcoming new industries. Companies like Godrej, TATA Motors, Kothari Info-tech have offered package of more than 4.5 l.p.a. In this period when placements were being cancelled from various colleges under the context of recession BVM proudly stands at a respectable position from the placement point of view as compared to various other colleges in the state. BVM has maintained one of the best placements in the Gujarat region and GTU in the year 2010. Apart from this, BVM provides a friendly atmosphere for the students who are preparing for competitive exams like CAT, GATE. Many students have secured above 98 percentile in CAT and GATE. Many expert lectures have been conducted to enhance the entrepreneurship in the students. Also workshops on communication skills and soft skills by H.M.Patel Career Development Center (CDC) and campus connect program between BVM-INFOSYS has developed the confidence among students.
